For some students, success in school comes naturally. For others, being a successful student takes a little more effort. However, anyone can succeed in school if they arm themselves with a few basic tips.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate
Step1
Go to school every day. Students who succeed in school attend school every day. Try to only miss school for emergencies or illnesses and be sure not to cut class. Being in the classroom will give you access to the teacher if you have questions, and you can obtain important class information. If you have to miss school, remember to always talk to your teacher to find out what you missed and how you can make up any missed assignments.
Step2
Remember to do all of your homework and to turn it in on time. Make sure that you know the specifics of each homework assignment and the due date. If you have any questions about how to do a homework assignment, be sure to ask your teacher for clarification. Also, be sure to allow enough time to do your homework assignments so you don't have to rush.
Step3
Study a little bit each day. The best way to study is to set aside a small amount of time every day for studying. You should avoid waiting until the last minute before a test or a quiz to study. If you study every day, you will know what topics cause you difficulty, and you will have time to ask your teacher for help. You also can avoid an overly stressed feeling on the night before a test if you have studied in advance. Successful students make time for studying and study a bit every day.
Step4
Ask for help if you need it. Your teacher wants you to be successful and wants to help you if you run into any difficulties. You can either raise your hand in class to ask a question or you can ask your teacher if you can have help outside of class. Remember that no question is too small or too stupid. At the first sign of something not making any sense, ask a question or ask for help. If you wait to ask for help, you will likely get more confused as the class goes on.
Step5
Stay organized. Invest in a student day planner, a calendar or simply a notebook to use for recording all of your important information. Be sure to record assignment due dates, test dates, homework assignments or any other important dates and information. Forgetting assignments or tests can prevent you from being a successful student, so be sure to make organization a priority.

Tips & Warnings

  • Consider hiring a tutor if you find yourself having trouble succeeding in school. A tutor can give you one on one instruction tailored towards your specific needs. Ask your teacher or school guidance counselor for assistance in finding a tutor.
  • Form a study group. Many students don't enjoy studying, but a study group can make it better. Be sure to remain focused on the task at hand when studying with a group, however. Members of a study group can also help answer questions you may have, and you can even quiz each other before upcoming exams.
  • Don't forget parent involvement. Students who succeed in school usually have involved parents. Have your parents meet your teacher. Make sure that your parents attend parent teacher conferences. Remember to keep your parents informed about your school day too.
