Washing, drying and storing a sweater or other knit garments can have horrible effects on the garment. If you have a sweater or other knit garment that has wrinkled, has fold lines or just looks misshapen you can use an iron to remove the problems. This is a fairly easy process that only requires and iron and towel.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Lay your garment flat on an ironing board or other surface. Make sure the item can't move around while you are ironing. This is especially important for knit items with wool or alpaca in them because these materials can felt.

  2. Step 2

Take a towel and wet it with water. Wring the towel out so that it is damp but not soaking. You can also use a pillow case for this.

  3. Step 3

    Heat up your iron.

  4. Step 4

Lay your garment into the correct shape that you want and lay the wet towel over it.

  5. Step 5

Use the iron to press down on the item and force steam into the garment.

  6. Step 6

Move the towel to another section of the knit garment and repeat the steps 4 and 5.

  7. Step 7

Re-wet the towel if is starts to get dry and continue to repeat steps 4 through 6 in order to press the entire garment.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always check the tag of the garment to ensure you know what you are planning to iron. Items made out of cashmere or silk should never be steam blocked since it can damage the sweater. Garments made out of wool can be accidentally felted if you're not careful.
