Find out what some of her interests and hobbies are. You can either call the girl's parents and ask for specific gift ideas or sit down with the girl for a little while and ask questions to see what she enjoys doing.

Ask what types of toys and gifts she currently has. Nothing is more disappointing than getting a gift you already have.

Buy an age appropriate gift. Just because Hannah Montana is all the rage doesn't necessarily mean buying a 12 year-old girl a Hannah Montana doll will guarantee a hit. Likewise, buying a sixyear-old a pink cell phone may not necessarily be appropriate or approved by the parent.

Use a personality profile test offered at a store or website. You can enter the girl's age and hobbies to pull up gifts that are age appropriate and suited for her interests.

Give a gift card to a large toy store. While this may not be as much fun opening, she'll have a blast when she gets to choose from thousands of toys and pick the perfect one.

Keep the receipt and give it to her parent. Just in case you are unable to find out what she likes and buy her a gift she already has or doesn't like, she can at least return it and get something she wants. Most stores offer a gift receipt, which doesn't include the price.
