How to Get AARP Health Insurance

AARP is a non-profit organization that provides information and advocacy services for members aged 50 years and over. AARP teams with private health insurance providers to provide health insurance to members. Plans include basic, supplemental and major medical insurance for members under age 65 and Medicare coverage for those over 65.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Join AARP. Open your Internet browser and go to the AARP website. Click the "AARP Membership" link at the top of the page. Enter your information and payment selection. You can also call (800) 444-6544 to join or get more information.

  2. Step 2

    Choose plans for your age group. Plans are separated into those for subscribers between 50 and 64 years of age and those for members who are 65 years or older.

  3. Step 3

    Check out the various categories of health insurance plans offered. Plans vary by deductible, hospital and prescription drug coverage, and dependent coverage. Regular plans include major medical, supplemental and essential insurance. Medicare plans for those 65 and older include supplemental and complete coverage.

  4. Step 4

    Browse physicians, drugs and pharmacies listed under the plan on the Medicare site to see if your providers and drugs are covered.

  5. Step 5

    Use the "Helpful Tips" link on the AARP website to find the right plan for you. This page lists the deductibles and types of plans most suited to your requirements.

  6. Step 6

    Meet the AARP health plan requirements. You must be over 50 years of age and be a legal resident of a state that offers the plan. You can be denied coverage for major risk factors under some plans.
