How to Swallow Bitter Medicine

Some medications, especially antibiotics, have a really bitter taste. Bitter medicines can trigger your gag reflex making it very difficult to swallow. Besides just biting the bullet and swallowing the medication, there are things you can do to make it easier to go down. Read further for more ways to swallow bitter medicine.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Wrap the pill in bread slathered with your favorite topping such as peanut butter, jelly or honey. This will overpower the taste of the medicine. Make sure that the medicine doesn't specify to take on an empty stomach.

  2. Step 2

    Grind pills into a powder with a mortar and pestle. Mix it into your favorite beverage such as tea, milk or soda. Be sure to swallow the entire drink to get your full dosage of the medicine.

  3. Step 3

    Mix liquid medications into your favorite beverages or soups. If the doctor prescribes your medication in large quantities, it may alter the flavor of the beverage or soup making it taste bitter as well. Make sure you can take the medication with food.

  4. Step 4

    Pinch the top of your nose when you need to swallow bitter medicine. You are unable to taste food if you can't smell it. Wash it down with a tasty beverage.

  5. Step 5

    Gulp a large amount of juice and keep it in your mouth. Place the pill in your juice-filled mouth and swallow.

  • Always read the information sheet that comes with your medicine for dosing instructions. Some medications can't be taken with food or certain beverages, such as citrus or milk.
