Step 1
Watch your local community theater website to find information on open auditions. Open auditions mean anyone can try out for a role in an upcoming production, regardless of his experience.
-
Step 2
Give the director an acting resume that includes all the parts you've played before. You should keep this resume accurate and up-to-date. It should also include your contact information so the casting team can reach you if they want to offer you a part or ask for an additional audition.
-
Step 3
Research the part you're auditioning for. If you attend an open audition, you'll likely do a cold reading, which means you'll be handed a script and asked to read from it. If you understand the character you're auditioning for, you're more likely to nail a cold reading.
-
Step 4
Wear something that might distinguish you from the other actors. For women, this could mean a distinctive scarf, or for men, an interesting hat. This makes it easier for the casting crew to remember you and your performance.
-
Step 5
Be on time for auditions and make sure you can stay a while. Open auditions in particular can last for hours depending on how many people are trying out.
-
Step 6
Greet the casting crew by looking them in the eye and giving them a firm handshake. Behave professionally during the audition process and answer their questions truthfully.
