How to Shop for Gift Cards

When you need a last-minute gift for a friend, family member or co-worker or simply prefer to let them choose one for themselves, a gift card is the ideal option. Putting thought into the cards you buy will make them seem like heartfelt gestures and not afterthoughts. Consider these tips when you shop.

1. Buy a gift card at the same store where you would ordinarily shop for a gift. If your friend is a golfer, for example, buy a card at a pro shop. If she's a scrapbooker or paper crafter, buy one at a local scrapbook or crafts store. This way, you've recognized her hobby, but are allowing her to choose the supplies she really needs.
2. Consider the recipient's style and lifestyle when buying gift cards. You won't want to buy one for a steak house to present to a vegetarian or one from a trendy boutique for a friend who dresses conservatively, for instance.
3. Ask for a list of locations in the store or restaurant chain before buying a gift card. The card should make it more convenient for your loved one to shop or dine, but it won't be so enjoyable if he has to drive for an hour just to use it.
4. Choose gift cards for luxury services that your friend or co-worker would never pay for herself. Try a certificate for a day at a spa, a massage, manicure or pedicure.
