On Rollerblades, the brake is usually a rubber stopper located behind the wheels, near the heel of the skate. Stop your forward motion by gently lifting your toes and dragging your brake on the ground. The steeper the angle you make with the ground, the faster you'll stop.

From Quick Guide: Rollerblading
Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Begin by skating slowly forward so you can control your stops.

  2. Step 2

Lift your front toes so your heel angles down toward the ground, until you feel the brake start to drag. The more pressure you apply on the brake, the faster you'll come to a full stop.

  3. Step 3

Try bringing your feet together and putting your weight toward the front of your Rollerblade wheels. Then, slide your back wheels sideways. The idea is to turn at a 90-degree angle from the direction you were headed, abruptly cutting off your forward motion. This takes practice and puts some wear on your wheels.

  4. Step 4

Practice stopping on your roller blades on a level surface while wearing your safety gear. Gradually increase your speed as you grow more comfortable with the stopping motion.

Tips & Warnings
  • Even the most talented Rollerbladers fall on occasion. Wear a helmet and protective pads to help minimize injuries and avoid serious accidents.
