More men are choosing to style their hair than ever before. Men's styles range from long and luscious, to short and messy. The type of product you use affects the outcome you achieve. It's important to use a product with the right amount of control, so be sure to read the label for texture and hold.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

    Choose a product

  1. Step 1

Style long hair by air drying, then apply a light hold cream or paste to midshaft and ends. Apply lightly at root if needed for frizz.

  2. Step 2

Apply medium hold pomade to shorter hair styles for a messier, more natural finish.

  3. Step 3

Distribute gel through very short styles for the strongest hold. Gel leaves the hair looking wet with a hard finish.

  4. Apply the product

  5. Step 1

    Shampoo and condition hair.

  6. Step 2

Dry hair to remove most moisture.

  7. Step 3

Choose a product with desired hold and finish.

  8. Step 4

Remove a small amount, based on hair length and product type. Start with less and add more if needed.

  9. Step 5

    Rub product between hands.

  10. Step 6

Distribute product evenly through hair using the palms of your hands.

  11. Step 7

Place hair in desired style. For a tousled look, mess your hair up and lay down a few pieces. When you use gel, comb product through hair and allow to dry.

Tips & Warnings
  • All products come in different hold and finishes. Check to see if the product is matte or shiny. Matte products have more hold than shiny products. A good way to tell if the product is right for you is to rub a small amount between two fingers, this will help you feel the texture and amount of hold.
