An equestrian trail ride is one of the greatest pleasures of horseback riding. As one rider puts it, trail rides are slow enough that you can think about where you're going and fast enough to get you there. It's important to be prepared for a trail ride, though, so read on for a few tips.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate
Step1
Train your horse well before the trail ride. Your horse needs to know basic cues like stopping, when to lower his head and calm down, how to cross a stream, when to speed up and not to eat while riding. You should be able to open and close a gate while mounted.
Step2
Put together a trail survival kit. A well-stocked kit might include a cell phone, a knife or multipurpose tool, a whistle, some energy bars, a bottle of sunscreen, waterproof matches, lip balm, petroleum jelly, a hoof pick, a flashlight, plastic baling twine, reflective tape, duct tape, a compass and a first-aid kit.
Step3
Dress appropriately. Bring a lightweight water-resistant pullover in case of a sudden storm. A bandana's emergency uses are endless. Always wear gloves--they keep your hands warm and protect your hands if you have to handle brush, rocks or wire.
Step4
Make sure you have all the necessary gear for your horse. A horse needs a bridle, saddle, saddle pad, halter and lead rope on the trail. You'll benefit from spare stirrup leather, chaps and a seat pad.
Step5
Equip your horse and yourself ahead of time to deal with emergencies on the trail. Know what to do if your horse spooks at rustling paper or storms. Become well versed in first aid and CPR. Familiarize yourself with how to use a compass and read a map.
