How to Design a Custom Suit

The type of suit a person buys represents their personality. Custom designing a suit allows a person to choose every detail about the garment including the fit, fabric and color. A suit bought off the rack often falls short of fitting perfectly. Usually, the pant legs and sleeve length need tailoring. A custom designed suit, however, fits the individual perfectly.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
Determine the color of the suit fabric. The occasion best determines the color. Formal occasions call for darker suits. For a versatile option, buy a black suit.
Step2
Choose the type of fabric. Choices in this category range from cotton and linen to wool and should be decided based on the season of the purchase. For example, buy a linen suit for summer or a wool suit for winter.
Step3
Select a jacket style that best suits your body type. Suit jackets come as single- or double-breasted in reference to the number of rows of buttons. You must also decide on the number of buttons in each row. There can also be either one vent—the flap in the back—or two.
Step4
Find the pant style that works best for you. The suit designer must decide whether to have pleats or no pleats, cuffs or no cuffs. Choose whether to have a pocket on each side of the back or just on one side.
Step5
Take all of the required measurements carefully. Measurements needed include those for the neck, chest, arms, waist, thigh and rise. Consult a measurement guide if needed to ensure your custom fit.
