After you design your raised flower beds, the next step is choosing the right lumber for your project. You want to use lumber that can take a beating from the elements, such as landscape timbers or railroad ties.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Lay out your design first so you can determine how much lumber you'll need to build your raised flower beds. More than anything, your plans will determine what kind of lumber is right, and how much.

  2. Step 2

Take photographs of the area where you want to build the raised flower beds, in addition to shots of the exterior of your home. Have them with you when you shop for lumber to help you determine what will look best.

  3. Step 3

Choose between railroad ties and landscape timbers. Railroad ties are slightly more expensive than landscape timbers, but they're also larger so you'll use less of them.

  4. Step 4

Consider buying less expensive lumber and treating it with a quality sealant or stain to protect it from the elements. This will take more of your time and labor, but less of your money.

  5. Step 5

Talk to a landscape specialist at a home improvement store or lawn and garden center to find out how to build your raised flower beds. Depending on your plans, some types of lumber are easier to work with than others, which can help direct your decision.
