How to Append Files to a DVD

DVDs much like their predecessor, the CD, burn information or data to the surface of the disk. The functionality of many burning programs allows you to burn information to the disk in different sessions. This functionality creates a multi-session disk. When you burn a disk you must select whether to close the disk or leave it open. Once you close the disk, you can no longer write to it.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Open your burning program and make a data DVD. Select any files that you want to place on the disk. If the files you put on the DVD did not fill the disk, there is still space left that you can write files to. Writing more files to this disk at a later time requires that you don't close the disk at the conclusion of this session.
Step2
Find the place in your burning studio that allows you to set properties for this disk. You will be able to name the disk, choose the write speed for the disk and choose whether you want to close this disk when the burning process finishes. Make all the setting changes that you like but when you reach the close this disk option, choose "no." This will leave the disk open for the later addition of more files.
Step3
Select your burning software at a later date when you have more files to add and put your disk in the drive. When the screen comes up that allows you to select the files to add to the disk you will notice all the files that you previously added appear grayed out, signifying that you can't delete them, but there is still space to add more files. Select the files you want to append to this disk and proceed to the burning sequence. As before, if you want to be able to burn files to this same disk in the future, do not close the disk at the conclusion of burning.
