How to Make People Appreciate Oneself

Getting people to appreciate you can be a tall order, especially if the people around you are self-involved or clueless about your contributions. If you want to get people to appreciate you, you'll need to come up with some clever ways to get your work noticed and show people what you're worth.

Instructions

    • 1

Define what appreciation means to you. Appreciation is a form of love and comes in all shapes and sizes. Some people take a simple thanks as enough while others prefer gifts, hugs or quality time. Be clear on your expectations of what would make you feel satisfied and the frequency you need to be appreciated.

    • 2

Take a vacation from whatever your role is in the people's lives you want some appreciation from. For example, if you're lacking a heartfelt thanks at work, take a couple weeks off and hire someone incompetent to replace you for the time you're gone. By the time you get back, people will be singing your praises.

    • 3

Make yourself less available by busying yourself with other things. For example, if your friends seem to take you for granted, start spending time alone, offer less advice, create a vacuum for the space you usually fill. No one can offer the same qualities you do, so put value on your time and offer it sparingly to those who don't give back or who deplete you.

    • 4

Express your needs to others when the time is right. Try to not make a big deal of it. Simply state what your contributions are, as you see it. Ask if the other person agrees, and tell him what you need in reciprocation to make the relationship right.

Offer your best, most positive self consistently and to everyone. People appreciate those who put forth effort and are fun to be around. Watch how an attitude adjustment for yourself helps adjust everyone around you.
