The first day of school can always seem a little threatening, especially if you are new to that particular school. There are ways to make a good impression and make friends on the first day of school.

1
Dress appropriately, and make sure you look neat and tidy. There is no need for designer clothes, but make sure you don't look sloppy. Wear nice jeans with a nice shirt that is tucked in if it's too long. Wear clean shoes and make sure your hair is combed.
-
2
Smile. People naturally migrate to others with positive attitudes. If you make a mistake or trip over something, laugh it off.

3
Strike up a conversation with people in the same class. If you're in the same class, you'll have something in common with them to talk about. Ask them how their weekend was, or what they like to do for fun. Chances are, you'll have the same interests as well.
-
4
Approach someone and give them a compliment, such as liking their shoes or their hair. This will help ease some tension and transition into a conversation.
-
5
Join extracurricular activities such as drama, speech or a sport. This is a great way to bond with others, and you will most likely have something in common with them.
-
6
Be yourself, and don't do something that makes you feel uncomfortable just to fit in. If you don't wear the latest fashions, don't start just to fit in with the "in crowd". If they are really your friends, they will like you the way you are, and not try to change you.

I don't think sometimes changing to fit in is such a bad thing...unless you completely change and start to do destructive things...developing new interests I don't think is bad though.
