How to Make Chalk Paint

Sidewalk paint is something that children love to use. Unfortunately the paint seems to disappear a lot faster than their creative impulses. Here's a simple way to make chalk paint when the bottle of real sidewalk chalk paint is empty. And because you are mixing your own colors, you can make all kinds of unique colors not found in the store.

Things You'll Need

  • Sidewalk chalk
  • Cups or containers for mixing
  • Water

Instructions

    • 1

Gather your materials. You can use small pieces of old sidewalk chalk if you wish to use it up.

    • 2

Hold a piece of chalk over the cup or other small container. Rub the side of the paintbrush or a stick over the side of the chalk to make dust. This can be quite messy so make sure to do this outdoors where the dust doesn't get on something valuable.

    • 3

Add water, a little bit at a time, to the chalk dust. The chalk paint should be the consistency of regular chalk paint. If you want more of a "wash" appearance to the project, then use thinner chalk paint.

    • 4

Continue mixing chalk dust and water in different containers until you get enough to complete your chalk masterpiece. You can add lighter or darker colors of chalk to create shading for the art work.

    • 5

Paint the design on the sidewalk. Since you now have the ability to create a wide range of colors, you can really get creative.

    • 6

Let the chalk drawing dry before walking on it. Use the garden hose to wash it off or let it disappear naturally the next time it rains.
