Sambo is a form of martial arts and combines a number of moves to create combos and other defensive positioning. This is a fairly easy move for the average person to learn and can be used in self-defense situations.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Approach your opponent from behind. Crouch down slightly with your right leg centered between their legs. You will have a similar stance, only staggered. This is important to note so that you can approach your opponent in the correct way.

  2. Step 2

Throw your right arm up and over your opponent's right shoulder. This is how you will add leverage to the move in order to take down your opponent. Leverage is needed if the opponent is taller, stronger or otherwise can overcome you. You need to move fast and have techniques that take them down to a smaller size than you.

  3. Step 3

Bend your right knee into theirs, causing them to lose footing, and pull back with your arm around their neck at the same time, bringing them down backwards. Be careful to step out of the way when you do this or they will come down on top of you.

  4. Step 4

Practice this move with a friend or sparing partner until you are comfortable with it. Make sure you practice the position and then take the move up to speed.

Tips & Warnings
  • Once you have it down, your body will be more likely to act accordingly in a frightening situation. Your fight-or-flight respond will engage with fight, allowing you to defend yourself.
