How to Let People Use One's PC

Although most people own a personal computer or PC, there's the occasional person who doesn't. Often times these folks use their friends' computers for daily tasks like checking e-mail and word processing. If you're going to let someone else use your PC, there are a few things you should do first.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy
Step1
Discuss basic guidelines that you'd like the user to follow. Web content and downloads are topics you'll definitely want to cover, especially if the user's a child or young adult.
Step2
Clean up your computer area if you're using a desktop. Store any financial documents and school records that may be lying about in a safe drawer.
Step3
Create a new user account for the person to use. Windows comes with a "Guest" account, but the person will have a more flexible and enjoyable computing experience with his or her own account.
Step4
Set the appropriate security restrictions for the account. Make sure your account's the only one with administrative clearance. This prevents the guest user from making changes to your computer's core settings.
Step5
Consider using software like VMWare Server to run a virtual machine on your computer. This allows the guest user to make as many changes as he or she likes to the system without actually affecting your computer.
Step6
Limit the amount of time people spend using your PC. This is an indirect but effective way to control the changes they can make to your system.
