The acrylic manicure is a common beauty treatment that continues to grow in popularity. The manicuring process usually involves cleaning, sanding and polishing the fingernails. An acrylic manicure calls for the application of false nails on top of the natural ones. The sanding of the nails is one of the most important components of an acrylic manicure. However, sanding your nails benefits your manicure even if you decide against false nails.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Apply a buffing cream to the nails before you begin sanding. A buffing cream moisturizes both the nails and the cuticles. Moisturizing this area prevents damage.

  2. Step 2

Obtain a traditional nail buffer or even a piece of chamois. If you would like, add beeswax to the nail buffer before you begin. Beeswax leads to additional shine.

  3. Step 3

Begin sanding your fingernails with the nail buffer. Sand gently and in one direction. Sanding too vigorously can cause nails to become too thin. Thinning of the nails is often a painful process.

  4. Step 4

Apply the acrylic nails on top of your real nails. Sanding is a benefit because it leaves the nail surface smooth and acrylic adheres better to the surface.

Tips & Warnings
  • Remember that sanding the nails helps to prevent the formation of nail splits, tears and fragile tips. Therefore, sanding your nails is important even if you don't plan to apply acrylic nails.
  • Soak nails in acetone when you decide to remove the acrylic nails. Commonly, acetone dries out the hands and nails so make sure to apply moisturizing lotion to the area afterwards.
