Sun offers the Java Development Kit (JDK) as a freely available set of tools for Java developers. The Sun JDK includes various development tools and Java libraries as well as the Java Runtime Environment (JRE). The JDK can be a helpful tool for programmers who want to create Java applets, applications or components. You can easily install the JDK on Windows, Linux or Solaris systems.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Go to the Sun website and read about the JDK. Make sure that your system meets the minimum requirements and that the JDK meets your Java programming requirements.

  2. Step 2

Click on the download button for the latest version of the JDK. Sun offers a range of different Java development packages, so make sure you download the one that has the features you want.

  3. Step 3

Accept the license agreement for the product. You must accept the license agreement to download the product. If you're a glutton for punishment, read it before you accept it.

  4. Step 4

Select the appropriate version for your operating system and then begin the download. If you choose the offline installation, you'll download a complete installer file. Use the online installation to perform a custom installation.

  5. Step 5

Run the JDK installer file and follow the instructions provided. After completing the installation process, you can safely delete the installer file.

  6. Step 6

Start using the JDK. Documentation, tutorials and forums are available on the Sun website and elsewhere on the Internet.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure you have a high-speed Internet connection to download the JDK. If not, find someone who does and have them burn the file to a CD—doing this will probably take less time than trying to download the package over a dial-up Internet connection.
