How to Diagnose Car Problems if Know Nothing About Cars

Mechanical problems are abundant in cars. It is most beneficial to have an auto mechanic in the family to cut down on the cost of auto repair. But like many people, that is not a luxury many people share. Diagnosing car problems may seem out of one's reach and comprehension, but it can be done with a little know-how.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Step1
Consult the vehicle's manual. Many problems in the modern car are detected by the car itself. A light will appear or a buzzer will go off alerting you that there is a problem. When this happens, pay attention and check the owner's manual right away. Replacement manuals are sold at auto part stores and local super centers.
Step2
Call a tow truck. Take advantage of auto clubs that pay for tow trucks. Pick the tow truck operator's brain when he is sent out. Tell him about the problem you noticed, what the car seems to be doing wrong and what lights or bells came on, and get his opinion and referral to an honest mechanic.
Step3
Go to online sites such as Auto Boardz for advice. Listen to the sounds the car is making. Determine where the sound is coming from and when it is coming. Then go to online help websites such as other eHow articles and outside sources. Choose the make, model, and year of the car. Look for answers to similar problems. Post questions on these online forums and wait for other people to respond with their suggestions and comments.
Step4
Consult a mechanic in training. Many local community colleges and vocational high schools have auto mechanic classes. Call the instructor and ask if they have any suggestions or would like to use your car's problem as a project to fix. This can be a real win-win situation - you get less expensive or free work done and the students have a real-life situation to learn in.
