Baking a cake requires you to measure and combined both dry and moist ingredients. Most cakes contain a standard set of ingredients, first the dry ingredients are measured and combined. Wet ingredients are added in at a separately point in the recipe process. It's crucial to learn the method of adding in wet and dry ingredients separately, in baking for the best results.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Stir together dry ingredients in a mixing bowl. Use your mixer to combine the ingredients, or simply stir together with a large spoon.

  2. Step 2

Measure the oil in a glass liquids measuring cup. Measure the milk in a glass liquids measuring cup; use the same cup, if desired. Mix with an electric mixer.

  3. Step 3

Crack the eggs one at a time into a measuring cup or small bowl. Check after each egg is dropped into the bowl for egg shell and remove it. Use a whisk or fork to beat the eggs before adding the eggs to the batter.

  4. Step 4

Pour the eggs into the mixture. Measure vanilla extract or recipe flavoring using a measuring spoon held over the mixing bowl. Small amounts of extract that splash into the bowl doesn't harm the batter.

  5. Step 5

Mix the batter with an electric mixer to combine the eggs and vanilla flavoring or specific extract with previous ingredients.

  6. Step 6

Additional liquid ingredients, such as water, coffee, or orange juice can typically be measured in liquid measuring cups. Refer to the recipe to determine when they should be added to the batter.

Tips & Warnings
  • You may use dry ingredient measuring cups to measure liquids if you prefer to do so. Thick moist ingredients such as oil or corn syrup may be more easily measured in measuring cups designed for dry ingredients.
  • Use a small spatula to expel drips that remain in the measuring cup after the ingredient is poured into the mix. Spray the measuring cup with cooking spray for sticky ingredients, like honey or corn syrup.
  • If egg shell has fallen in, carefully remove all bits of eggshell with a fork, and use the egg only if all eggshell can be removed. Break eggs in a separate bowl to avoid getting egg shell in the ingredients.
