Double-click "Tools" on the menu bar. Follow the menu to and select "Folder Options."

      • 3

Move your cursor over the "View" tab. Click on it and scroll down to the "Advanced Settings" options.

Locate "Use Simple File Sharing (Recommended)." Uncheck this option by clicking on it.

      • 5

      • 6

Check to see that the old, simple file sharing interface is gone. Repeat Steps 1 through 3. If you successfully disabled simple file sharing, "Security" and "Sharing" tabs will appear.

    Tips & Warnings

    • Apply the above process to all versions of Windows XP including, but not limited to the Windows XP Home Edition.

    • Disabling the simple file sharing feature in Windows XP may make sharing files with a novice computer user more difficult. Take caution when sharing files and folders with other users and groups. If not done correctly, you may accidentally share confidential folders and files.

holosophy is correct, I don't think the article writer even tested these instructions on a Microsoft XP Home Edition PC.

I believe that this is in fact completely erroneous - I use XP Pro almost exclusively, and this is certainly true for Pro and I believe also media versions, however in Home Edition you cannot turn off simple file sharing - the check box does not appear on the Tools>Folder Options>View tab, or anywhere else for that matter. For some reason M'soft, in it's "wisdom" deemed that it should not be included as an option in the Home Edition.
