A garage door operator is a helpful convenience that can spoil us quickly, especially when the weather is bad. The remote control that operates that garage door is an easy device to program too. If you own a Genie Intellicode remote control, follow these simple steps and you'll be pulling in and out of the garage in no time.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Ladder
  • Phillips-head screwdriver

Locate the Learn Code Button

Step1
Look for the learn code button on the garage door operator which is hanging from the ceiling in the garage. (Many models say, "Learn Indicator" under the button.) The button is about the size of an eraser on a pencil and near a little red LED light. A ladder may be necessary to reach the garage door operator.
Step2
Check around the outside of the garage door operator first to find the learn code button. If you find it, proceed to the programming section below. If you do not see it on the outside of the operator, remove the white light cover.
Step3
Examine the light cover to determine if it has screws. Be sure to check the top of the light cover too. If you find screws, use a Phillips-head screwdriver to remove them. If there are no screws, push down on the top of the light cover and pull it toward you. Once the button is located, begin programming.

Program the Remote Control

Step1
Press and release the learn code button. The red light next to it will begin to blink and continue to blink for approximately 30 seconds; you'll only have this amount of time to program the remote.
Step2
Hold the remote away from the antenna wire.
Step3
Push the remote button three times. The first time you push it, the light will go solid. The second time, the light will go out. The third time, the door will operate which means the remote is programmed. For assistance, call Genie Customer Care at (800) 35Genie or (800) 354-3643. They will be happy to help you.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not stand under the garage door operator when pressing the remote button or it's not likely to program.
  • If the remote control does not program, change the battery and program again.
  • If the remote control does not program, see if there is a little switch on the side that changes the frequency. If so, change the frequency by flipping it to the opposite position and program again.
  • Not all Genie Intellicode remote controls work with every Genie Intellicode model. If you are not sure your remote will work, call the customer care at Genie.
  • Do not hold the learn code button in—merely press and release it. Holding it in will clear out the garage door operator and you will have to re-program all devices
  • Do not stand under the garage door operator when pressing the remote button or it's not likely to program.
