How to Practice the Left Hand Velocity Stroke on the Snare Drum

The left hand velocity stroke is done by putting the maximum amount of velocity into the head of the drum stick, which creates a solid sound for all counts. This is an important technique to know when playing the snare drum.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Understand proper body positioning to play the marching snare drum. Since the snare drum is most often playing in a marching band, the body positioning is extremely important. You need to maintain a straight spine all the way through your neck, loose but strong shoulders and the proper 45-degree angle with the stick.

  2. Step 2

Know how to hold the drum stick. This should start with the stick resting between the first and second knuckle of the index finger and the thumb placed opposite the finger to grip the stick. The other three fingers wrap loosely around the stick with the pinky, completing what is known as the bottom fulcrum.

  3. Step 3

Start the left hand velocity stroke at what is called 12 inches. This is where the stick is 12 inches from the top of the drum, parallel with the ground. Throw for one third of the stroke and rest for the other two-thirds. When you maximize the first third of the stroke, the rebound takes care of the last two thirds.

  4. Step 4

Practice the left hand velocity stroke until you feel confident in completing it. It should feel natural and not require you to watch your movements. This allows you to execute the move while marching and in sync with other drummers.
