Instructions
  1. Step 1

Find out when tryouts for your high school basketball freshman team starts. Once you have the date begin preparations. Spend the summer before high school playing as much basketball as you can.

  2. Step 2

Hone your basketball skills by practicing shooting, dribbling, passing and footwork. Participate in pickup games and work on the fundamentals alone. Remember that coaches look for good shooters and players with defensive skill.

  3. Step 3

View instructional videos or read books that can give you basketball tips. Sometimes one tip such as how to defend the post can make the difference in making the team.

  4. Step 4

Arrive at tryouts early and talk about basketball techniques with other players while you warm up. Coaches favor players who focus on basketball both on and off the court.

  5. Step 5

Give 100 percent effort when running plays, working drills and passing techniques. Listen carefully and follow directions. Expend all of your energy during tryouts.

  6. Step 6

Be enthusiastic and applaud other players who make good plays. Coaches are looking for team players. Pass the ball--coaches appreciate players who can make assists.
