Working from home is becoming more popular as technological advances make it possible to communicate with offices and clients without ever leaving the house. One of these home-based businesses is the field of transcription, and you can save on wardrobe and commuting costs by setting up a home office. Follow these steps to make your home transcription office a reality.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate
Step1
Invest in the right equipment. To set up a home transcription office, buy the basics such as a transcription machine, computer, printer, fax machine, filing cabinets and miscellaneous office supplies including pens, pencils and printer paper. Take your time to shop and price these items because they make up your first and most important business expense.
Step2
Upgrade your Internet service. To be successful at a home transcription business, you'll have clients who aren't within driving range. An essential part of your office will be high-speed Internet access so that you can receive and return jobs and email as quickly as possible.
Step3
Track all deadlines. Your clients need their records in a timely fashion, so it's imperative that you honor deadlines. In order to do this, equip your office with desk or wall calendars designated specifically for this purpose, or use a computer calendar program that alerts you to upcoming work deadlines.
Step4
Maintain meticulous records. Since you're working from home, you'll have to develop a method for keeping track of clients, incoming work, completed work and billing. Buy file folders and labels and open a file for each client and your accounting.
Step5
Keep trays on your desk. A stackable tray system on the corner of your desk can help you keep organized. You can designate trays for any active work, such as signing potential clients, work to be completed, correspondence and invoicing.
Step6
Specify office hours. Although you're working from home, you're still working and should maintain set office hours even if they vary from day to day. If you have other commitments each week, schedule your office hours around them and stick to the schedule.
Step7
Treat your office well. It may be a home office, but you should treat it like any other office you'd go to each day. That means uncluttering your desk, filing papers and straightening your work area at the end of each workday so that you can jump right back into work the next day.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you're setting up a home transcription office but have kids at home, work around their schedules if possible so that you have uninterrupted time to get your assignments done.
  • Make sure you don't succumb to others pressuring you to do favors for them just because you're at home. Remember that this is your career, and remind friends and family of that fact as necessary.
