A wooden wheelbarrow planter makes a great addition to any front yard or flower garden. Instead of spending a load of money to buy one, gather a few pieces of wood and materials you already have around your garage to make your own.

From Quick Guide: Garden Planters
Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Two 30-inch long 1x1 or 2x2 boards
  • Two 16-inch 2x4 boards
  • Two 18-inch 2x4 boards
  • One 16x18 inch board
  • Wood drill bit
  • Saw
  • Long galvanized bolt and nut
  • Galvanized screws
  • Sander or grinder
  • Paint or stain
  • Sealant
  1. Step 1

Use two pieces of wood measuring about 1 to 2 inches in diameter and about 30 or more inches long as the handles. They can be square, rectangle or round.

  2. Step 2

Drill a hole 2 inches from the bottom of each handle with a wood drill bit. The holes should be slightly larger than your galvanized bolt.

  3. Step 3

Cut a round wood piece about 10 inches in diameter out of the thickest piece of wood. Make the wheel the any desired size.

  4. Step 4

Bore a hole through the center of the wheel with a large wood drill bit just a little bigger than the designed bolt.

  5. Step 5

Attach the handles, one on each side, to the wheel with the bolt and a nut. Make the handles flush with the wheel and protrude out in a "V" shape.

  6. Step 6

Measure and cut a board about 16 x 18 inches for the base of the wheelbarrow. Lay the base on top the wheel-arm piece, and attach it with screws.

  7. Step 7

Cut two 2x4 boards to 16 inches, and two more to 18 inches. Bevel the edges of the boards with a grinder and sander, and attach the boards to the outer edges of the wheelbarrow base with screws.

Tips & Warnings
  • Stain, paint and seal your wheelbarrow any colors you choose. If the wheelbarrow is going to be outside, you need to seal it with a weatherproof coating.
  • If you don't have a very thick board for a wheel, cut two wheels and glue them together with wood glue before boring the hole in the middle.
