1
Choose a chain in you don't already have one in mind. The size of the necklace will have a lot to do with the size of the pendant. If the necklace is very light and thin, making a large and heavy pendant could put too much weight on it. Decide the size of the pendant you will make based on what will look appropriate with rest of the necklace.

2
Get a piece of wood. Depending on how large and thick you want the pendant to be, you may be able to find a piece of wood in your yard or parking lot. If not, look to the local trees and bushes and find a small branch that can be trimmed for your wood.

3
Use a handsaw or a pocketknife to carefully cut the wood into the right shape and size. Unless the wood is a hardwood, a pocketknife should work fine.
-
4
Sand the wood with sandpaper until it has a smooth surface. Once it's as smooth as you want it, decorate it with paint or colored pencils.
-
5
Cover the pendant by painting it with a polyurethane coating to protect the design. Apply it in a ventilated area and let it dry thoroughly before handling it again.
-
6
Use a small drill to make a hole in the pendant. The chain will go through the hole to hold the wooden pendant. Or you could install a tiny eyelet that screws into the wood for the necklace chain to go through. Pendant eyelets are found in craft stores like Michaels or Hobby Lobby, or any store that carries jewelry-making supplies.
