Water skiers captivate observers as they glide across the water behind a roaring speedboat. Locate a large body of water, and you're sure to find water skiers. The first step in participating in this sport is to learn the technique to get on your water skis.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Lie on your back in the water with your skis on and your knees shoulder-width apart. Raise your knees towards your chest as though you're sitting in a chair.

  2. Step 2

Grasp the ski handle between your knees. Hold on tight. Keep your skis shoulder-width apart, and point the skis up. Make sure about a foot of each ski is above the water.

  3. Step 3

Keep your skis together and straight as the boat starts to move. The skis must be 1 to 2 ½ feet apart. Maintain your sitting position.

  4. Step 4

Let the boat pull you up as it increases speed. Wait until your skis are parallel to the water to stand upright.

  5. Step 5

Keep your knees slightly bent as you ski to absorb the shocks from the skis hitting water.

  6. Step 6

Relax, and remember not to lean forward or backwards.

Tips & Warnings
  • Learn the water skiing hand signals before entering the water. Thumb up means faster, thumbs down means slower. Hand out equals stop, while a pointed finger signals left or right. These simple signals enable you to communicate with the boat while you're skiing along behind.
  • Always wear an approved life jacket while in the water.
  • As with all sports, consult with your doctor beforehand to make sure you are healthy enough to water ski.
