Special occasions often call for a fancy dress. Along with that fancy dress, you may need a specialty bra to account for all that extra skin showing. Backless dresses require a specific type of bra, one that either has a very low hook or none at all. There are many types of backless bras. Make sure to buy the correct type with a few tips.

1. Know your size and get the right fit. Go to a department store or specialty lingerie store and have the sales woman measure you. Many women are surprised to find they've been wearing the wrong size. Fit is especially important with low back styles.

2. Decide if you want underwire or not. This is based on preference. However, for night time styles, it may be wise to choose underwire for more support and definition. It also enhances the bust better than a bra without underwire.

3. Buy to fit your dress. Make sure you bring the outfit you're wearing when trying on the bra. There's nothing worse than finding a bra with the perfect fit, only to find that it shows under your dress.

4. Know that there are many styles, out there, of low back bras. There are strapless, clear strap, regular strap, bodysuit, plunging cleavage, corset and wrap-around versions, among others.

5. Choose the color. Nude is always best for light colored clothing, but black is best for darker colors. Many companies also offer choices in nude colors, ranging from very dark to very light, depending on your skin color.
