Learning how to change the oil and filter on your R11 is important and can save you money in the long and short run. Taking care of your own motorcycle maintenance is satisfying and cost effective as long as you have the basic skills to do the job right.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Ride your bike until the oil is up to the standard operating temperature. Turn the bike off and place on a side stand to allow the oil cooler to drain. This will take approximately 10 minutes.

  2. Step 2

Put the bike on a center stand. Remove the oil filler cap. Look directly below the engine in the middle of the engine block, to locate the oil drain bolt. Place oil pan under the bolt and remove the bolt. Let the oil drain. Once it has drained completely, replace the drain bolt and tighten to 32Nm.

  3. Step 3

Locate the oil filter (looking from below the engine block) which is in front of the drain bolt and recessed into the engine. Place the drain pan under the filter. Use a filter wrench to remove the filter.

  4. Step 4

Allow the small amount of oil contained there to drain into the oil pan, while you are unscrewing the filter. Pour the oil out of the filter and into the drain pan. Allow all the oil from the engine to drip into the pan. You want all of the oil out of every area in which it is located. Smear a little oil onto the gasket of the new oil filter.

  5. Step 5

Fill the new filter with oil. This will need to be done in steps as the oil will seep down and require you to add more. Screw the filter back in and tighten with the oil filter wrench to 11Nm.

  6. Step 6

Pour fresh oil into the oil filler, which will take about 3.75 quarts. Replace the filler cap. Ride until the temperature is up to the normal level and check the oil level again to make sure it is full.
