Adobe Photoshop CS3 comes with a wide variety of presets that you can use in your Photoshop documents. You may find that you want to edit these gradient presets to create a custom look unique for your document.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Adobe Photoshop CS3
  1. Step 1

Open Adobe Photoshop CS3 and start a new blank canvas or open an existing document from your files.

  2. Step 2

Select the "Gradient" tool from the Photoshop toolbox. The Photoshop toolbox is located on the left side of the Photoshop screen. If you don't see the "Gradient" tool, look for the "Paint Bucket" tool. Click on the "Paint Bucket" tool with your mouse and select "Gradient tool" from the pop-up list. Once you have selected the "Gradient" tool, the tools presets will be displayed on the "Options" bar in Photoshop. The "Options bar" is located at the top of the screen, just beneath the "Menu" bar.

  3. Step 3

Click on top of the second option on the left side of the "Options" bar of gradient properties. This is the drop-down list of gradient presets. When you click on the current gradient preset, the "Gradient Editor" dialog box will open.

  4. Step 4

Choose a gradient preset from the "Presets" box at the top of the "Gradient Editor" dialog box that you would like to edit. The settings for that preset will be displayed in the rest of the dialog box after you have chosen it.

  5. Step 5

Select whether you want to create a solid or noise gradient by choosing an option from the "Gradient Type" drop-down list. Set the smoothness by typing in a number between 0 and 100 percent in the "Smoothness" box.

  6. Step 6

Use the gradient slider to add, remove or change the color stops for the gradient preset. You can also change the opacity and color locations for the chosen gradient preset at the bottom of the "Gradient Editor."

  7. Step 7

Click the "OK" button to close the "Gradient Editor" and save the changes you have made to the selected gradient preset.
