Adjusting the angle and scale of a gradient overlay in Adobe Photoshop CS3 can make a real difference in the look you will get for your gradient. The angle adjusts the angle in which light is reflected on the gradient while the scale adjusts the width of the color blocks that make up the gradient.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Adobe Photoshop CS3
  1. Step 1

Open Adobe Photoshop CS3 and create a new blank canvas or open an existing document to which you would like to add a gradient overlay with an adjusted angle and scale.

  2. Step 2

Create a new layer in the "Layers" palette or select an existing layer to which you would like to add a gradient overlay.

  3. Step 3

Right-click on the layer you want to add the gradient overlay to and choose "Blending Options" from the shortcut menu. The "Layer Style" dialog box will appear.

  4. Step 4

Click on "Gradient Overlay" from the "Style" list on the left side of the "Layer Style" dialog box. The settings for the gradient overlay will be displayed on the right side of the dialog box.

  5. Step 5

Choose the settings for the blend mode, opacity, type and style of the gradient using the lists and sliders in the "Layer Style" dialog box.

  6. Step 6

Click the line in the circle by the word "Angle." Drag the line around the circle to change the angle or type in the angle in the text box just to the right. The angle you specify will change how light is reflected in your gradient.

  7. Step 7

Use the slider to increase and decrease the "Scale" of the gradient. The more you increase the scale the larger the blocks of colors will be with a more gradual flow from one color to the next. A small scale will result in narrow blocks of color with a less gradual flow in between colors. Click "OK" to close the "Layer Style" dialog box and apply the gradient overlay with adjusted angle and scale.
