Taking care of a loved one can be so rewarding, but there are times when it feels overwhelming, too. You're juggling family, career and caregiving. You want to do everything you can but you just can't do it all. This article will provide some ways to deal with caregiving and how to get started.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Things You’ll Need:

  • Patience
  • The want and desire to help someone in need.
  • Caregiver wisdom
  • Breaks when available
  • Knowledge of type of care
  • Support from family or friends
  • Time to spend on the one who wish to provide care.
  • Knowing who you are caring for and the the type of care they need.
  • Knowledge of things needed for their care. Like homecare equipment.

Step1
The first step is becoming knowledgable in who you will be caring for. That particular person or child may have specific needs. Once you are familiar with those needs, you will be a better provider. Know what equipment may be needed in your or their home. Know the meals they like. Know the person as well as you can. Once you meet their needs, you need to learn how to juggle yours and theirs. This can be challenging and stressful at times, but can be done. Have a backup provider for those stressful times or when you need a break. If your stressed your not helping them nor yourself. You must remember to also take care of yourself.
Step2
The second step would be to learn how to manage your life and theirs. You may have a job also and provide care in your spare time. You may have children or others to care for. So managing time can be just as much as a challenge as any. Be prepared to assist in helping with transportation or grocery shopping, appointments and even just a companion.
Step3
There are many ways to becoming a caregiver. You need to decide what kind of care you plan on giving. If you plan to caregive as a career assisting with the elderly, there are many positions available. Or if you choose to plan to care for children, that are programs like foster care, daycare or childrens learning centers you could apply. Maybe you just plan to care for someone in your own family, like a relative or a parent. Know there are different kinds of care and some can be very rewarding and reward you financially. Check with volunteer centers, Departments of Human Resources to see what is available for the kind of care you wish to give.
