Get the creative juice flowing by making up a storybook with the kids. Create a learning and bonding experience with this easy to make keepsake with things that you already have around the house.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Kids: one or more
  • crayons or markers
  • Paper: white or colored
  • stapler or hole punch and yarn
  • pencil or pen

Step1
Sit down with the kids and brainstorm for a little bit. Let each child draw pictures for their own story. Allow older children to write their own story also. Just guide them through helping with the set up of the story.
Step2
Figure out how the characters are going to be in their story. Ask questions like what is a hero and a villain? Or who is going to be the good guy and who is going to be the bad guy?
Step3
Set up the setting of the story. What is the good guy doing by himself right now? Have the kids draw a picture. Write what is happening on a separate piece of paper.
Step4
What is the bad guy doing right now by him or herself? Have the kids draw a picture. Write what is happening on a separate piece of paper.
Step5
Establish the plot. What is going to happen for the good guy and the bad guy to meet each other? Or what is the bad guy doing that will make the good guy come? Have the kids draw a picture. Write what is happening on a separate piece of paper.
Step6
What happens after the good guy stops the bad guy? What is the bad guy doing? What is the good guy doing? Have the kids draw a picture. Write what is happening on a separate piece of paper.
Step7
On a separate piece of paper make a title and draw a cover for the book.
Step8
Put all of the pages in order. Allow the pictures to face their written descriptions when putting the books together.
Step9
Staple or punch holes and tie together.
Step10
Share, read and enjoy.

Tips & Warnings

  • Mount onto card stock for stability.
  • Laminate pages to give a little protection
  • Older children may want to keep on writing stories. Primary Composition books are great for 7 to 9 year olds for a pre-made book that they will be able to work on when they want.
  • Authors and Date the book for keepsake purposes
  • Great as gifts
