Do not skimp on the helmet. A helmet is a necessary purchase and can protect the rider from a brain injury. Do not pick a helmet just because it is the cheapest. However, just because a helmet is high priced does not mean it is the best bike helmet. Learn how to pick the right bike helmet.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Look for a helmet that are approved by the American national Standards Institute or the Snell Memorial Foundation.

  2. Step 2

Make sure the helmet fits properly. The helmet should touch the head at the crown, sides, front, and back. Helmet should very little to none wiggle room. You can use the sizing pads usually included with the helmet to fine tune the fit.

  3. Step 3

When buying a helmet try it on first if possible. Push to the sides, front, and back. If it moves enough to create a gap between the head and the pad, you will need thicker pads. If it is still loose, choose a smaller helmet.

  4. Step 4

Adjust the straps. Make sure they are comfortable and not hard to fasten.

Tips & Warnings
  • If buying a helmet for a child, bring them with you to get the right fitting. A child may be more comfortable wearing a helmet if they are involved in picking it out.
  • A bright pink helmet is the easiest to spot when biking in a traffic area.
