I am not a good gardener by all means. I had to do some research on this one from family, friends and the internet. I've found quite a few ways to deter pests from your garden.
Mulch or cedar chips are good to ward off the bad bugs, yet attract the good bugs for your garden. I was told spiders like to burrow themselves in the mulchy, hay like pieces and prey upon "the bad guys".
Step2
Also, I was told that certain bugs like certain plants. So to reduce or eliminate a possible infestation of a certain type of bug, mix up your plants a little bit. Don't cluster a whole bunch of a certain type of plant together.
Step3
Aromatic plants are supposed to be natural deterrents. The smellier the plant is, the less likely the bug will like it. For example, garlic and onions if placed in between some of the flowering plants may ward off some of the annoying little buggers. Herbs like mint and rosemary are known for discouraging the egg-laying of some insects.
Step4
Soapy water spray is also a good option. It is a natural alternative but does the trick. Fill a spray bottle with a bit of soapy water and spray on the leaves.
Step5
Another thing that I have not heard before until now is to only water your plants in the day time. It makes sense though. The sun helps the plants absorb the water. However if watering at night, it becomes a standing pool of water attracting bugs.
Step6
The last thing I learned is to place a birdhouse somewhat close to your garden area. Birds prey on bugs.
