Using rechargeable batteries in your gadgets is a great way to help save the environment and save your money at the same time. However with time, rechargeable batteries lose their capacity. Here is how you can improve the life of your standard rechargeable batteries.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • NiMH Rechargeable Batteries
  • A battery charger
  • A refrigerator or freezer

Step1
Perform "Battery Conditioning". Fully discharge and then fully charge your battery for 5 cycles to remove any "memory" effects and return the battery to optimal capacity.
Step2
Store batteries in a freezer or refrigerator when not in use. Rechargeable batteries lose charge when not in use, as much as 20% in the first 24 hours after charge. The colder the batteries, the slower they will lose charge.
Step3
Refrain from storing your batteries for longer than a couple days between charging and use for best capacity.

Tips & Warnings

  • Rechargeable batteries lose capacity and charge over time. If you have tried the above and are not satisfied, consider buying a new set of batteries.
  • Putting batteries directly in the freezer after charging may damage the battery. Always let them warm up to room temperature.
  • In reverse, never put the batteries directly in the freezer after charging.
