Rasam is a South Indian soup that is made primarily with the juices of a tomato with pepper and other spices. Here's a simple recipe

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • toor dal (togari bele) - 1/4 cup
  • tomatoes - 1 16 oz.can or 4 large tomatoes OR
  • cumin seeds - 1/2 teaspoon (optional)
  • chili powder - 1/2 teaspoon
  • turmeric powder - 1/2 teaspoon
  • hing powder - 1/2 teaspoon
  • grated coconut - 1 tablespoon
  • mustard seeds - 1/2 teaspoon
  • coriander seed powder - 1/2 teaspoon
  • curry leaves - a bunch
  • salt to taste
  1. Step 1

    Boil the tomatoes well until they are soft and spongy.

  2. Step 2

    Add bele, salt, chili powder, turmeric powder and tamarind extract.
    Simmer for a few minutes.

  3. Step 3

    Blend the grated coconut with coriander seed powder and hing powder. Simmer for a few minutes.

  4. Step 4

    Heat a little oil in a fry pan and pop the mustard seed. Add curry leaves after removing the heat source and add it all to the tomato mixture.

  5. Step 5

    Pour into a bowl, garnish with coriander leaves and enjoy!
