Rasam great for the sniffles!
Rasam great for the sniffles!

Rasam is an Indian dish that is also called mulagatani soup. It can be made in several different ways, mine is a modification of the tomato soup. I have simplified the recipe so anyone can cook this without making a trip to the Indian grocery store.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 2 teaspoons of oil
  • 1/2 an onion
  • 2 pods garlic
  • mustard seeds
  • dried red chillies (peppers) 2-5 as desired
  • 2 tomatoes or 1 can of tomatoes
  • black pepper
  • cilantro
  • water
  1. Step 1

In a saucepan heat 2 table spoons of oil

  2. Step 2

add 1/2 spoon of mustard seeds and let them sputter

  3. Step 3

add red chillies and then onions and crushed garlic, fry until golden brown

  4. Step 4

add finely cut tomatoes or can of tomatoes and cover until tomatoes are smushy and cooked, add 1/2 a teaspoon of turmeric

  5. Step 5

add 4 cups of water and let it boil

  6. Step 6

add 1/2 tsp of freshly ground black pepper and cut cilantro and eat it hot in a bowl with some white rice. It can be drunk like a soup with a spoon

Tips & Warnings
  • Turmeric is of great medicinal value acting as an antiseptic and antibacterial agent. Curcumin is one of it's components.
  • A dash of pepper in any dish helps the body absorb curcumin better
  • garlic is of great medicinal value too
  • A good treatment for colds
  • Smells up the house with onion and garlic smell therefore use exhaust or cook outside if possible.

on 5/10/2008 This is an Indian dish, but I have noticed that some of the spices used in Indian cooking are also used in Latin American cooking, like cilantro. I will try it.
