My close friend is a well respected audiologist. I asked her how I could convince my uncle that he really needs a hearing aid. Outside of the obvious reasons, here is what she had to say about recent research on hearing. I've retold it in a way that should make it easy to understand.
Step2
Tell anyone that needs a hearing aid, that the longer they put it off the more damage they create to the brain cells/nerves that aid in the hearing process.
Step3
For example, if you cannot hear certain sounds well, that area of the brain, over time, stops registering that sound. In other words, without sound to stimulate that area of the brain the cells/nerve endings atrophy and lose their ability to pick up those sounds. As a result, if you wait too long to get a hearing aid you may cause permanent hearing damage than may not be easily reversed.
Step4
Just like physical therapy to heal an injury, the brain needs to be able to process sound to keep an individual's hearing in shape. And, only a hearing aid can exercise a person's ears to keep their hearing in shape.
Step5
You may want to add that many musicians, pilots, and dentists wear hearing aids. They are not a symbol of age, just a symbol that you are still interested in participating in the sounds of life.
Tips & Warnings
See your local audiologist for more information and a hearing check-up.
Don't miss out on life's beautiful sounds...get a hearing aid.

This is very true. Many people put off getting a hearing aid, thinking that they'll just get one when they just can't take it anymore. However, when you go to the audiologist and it is determined that you have a hearing loss, you will be given an additional test to see how well your brain is still capable of interpreting sound. If it's not, a hearing aid will not help as much and that safety net is gone.

My husband, who has been VERY stubborn about his increasing hearing loss, seems impressed with your friend's advice. I never knew that waiting too long can actually impair your ability to be helped. If this knowledge doesn't work, nothing will. I've done a lot of research, and we both learned something. I'll give this one 4 stars, only because I'd like to see some links to noted medical sights backing up your information. But hey, thanks!!
