There are a variety of ways to prepare for the SAT exam. This method provides a low cost solution that may appeal to certain students.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Tooth and Nail (ISBN 0-15-601382-7)
  • The Tales of Edgar Allan Poe (A Kaplan SAT Score-Raising Classic)(ISBN 0-7432-6468-1)
  • Frankenstein (A Kaplan SAT Score-Raising Classic) (ISBN 0-7432-5578-x)
  • Vampire Dreams (ISBN 1-4114-0083-6)
  1. Step 1

Do not panic! When you panic you forget things that you know.

  2. Step 2

Create a schedule and study well before the test. Cramming won't help. As in sports, you need to win one game at a time.

  3. Step 3

Reading is a great way to learn new words. Seeing words in their natural context make them easier to remember as opposed to studying artificial exercises.

  4. Step 4

There are a variety of novels that include SAT words Two novels published by Kaplan (the people that provide test preparation services) are Frankenstein and The tales of Edgar Allen Poe. The right-side page tells the story (the SAT words are in bold text). The left-side page lists the words that appear on the right-side page with their definitions. This method makes it easy to read the story and see the words and their definitions.

  5. Step 5

Vampire Dreams published by SparkNotes (owned by Barnes and Noble) list the SAT words on the bottom of each page. Tooth and Nail publish by Hartcourt lists the SAT words in an appendix. All of the books are entertaining and all will help you learn the SAT words.

  6. Step 6

Make flashcards for the words. Use them for practice. However, in addition to saying the word's definition, write a sentence using that word.

  7. Step 7

Randomly select 10 flashcards. Try to write a paragraph using the ten words. Instead of just memorizing the word's definition, this method will make you more familiar with each word. It will make each word part of your vocabulary.

Tips & Warnings
  • Study with a friend or review the words with mom and dad.
  • Get a good night's sleep before the test.
  • Eat breakfast and relax. If you studied properly in a timely manner you won't have to study before the test and get nervous.
  • Relax!
