How to Eliminate Keratosis Pilaris
Keratosis pilaris is a noninfectious skin condition that manifests in the form of raised, acne-like bumps and flaking skin. According to the Mayo Clinic, the condition generally appears on the buttocks, upper arms, legs and face and is caused by the buildup of keratin, a protein that protects the skin. Treatment of both mild and severe cases of keratosis pilaris is done at home and with the help of a doctor.

1
Avoid scrubbing or rubbing the skin, both during and after showers. According to the Mayo Clinic, this will make the keratosis pilaris even worse. Instead, use a puff or washcloth to gently cleanse the skin and pat it dry with a towel after showering.
-
2
Wash the affected area with mild soap and warm water twice a day. This will prevent the area from becoming aggravated, worsening the symptoms. Mild soaps contain no dyes or perfumes.

3
Apply a moisturizing lotion or a lotion that contains lactic acid, urea or salicylic acid to the freshly cleaned areas. The lotion will moisturize the skin and lactic acid, urea and salicylic acid will help remove excess keratin from the skin's surface.
-
4
Apply an over-the-counter or prescription acne treatment such as tretinoin or adapelene to the affected area every night.
-
5
Run a humidifier, especially during the drier winter months. Adding moisture to the air will prevent your skin from drying out, which will relieve some of the symptoms associated with keratosis pilaris.
-
6
Speak to your physician or dermatologist about microdermabrasion. This procedure is performed in the office and will remove some of the keratosis pilaris by scrubbing away the unwanted bumps. Microdermabrasion is sometimes used in conjunction with other procedures.

7
Speak to your physician or dermatologist about Intense Pulsed Light therapy, or IPL. During this procedure, light energy in the form of lasers is targeted at the affected area to remove the unwanted bumps and discoloration.
