This is a tried and true method to potty training your new puppy.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • kitty litter
  • kitty litter box
  • newpaper
  1. Step 1

Set up a kitty litter box with litter in it near your back door. Spread some newspaper on the floor around it.

  2. Step 2

Take your puppy and sit him/her down in the litter box and try to keep them there for a while to try and get them to use the bathroom in the box at least once.

  3. Step 3

Every two to three hours, take your puppy to the litter box and sit them on it for a while to see if they go. They will start getting used to the box and just like cats, they will eventually figure out that they are supposed to use the bathroom in it.

  4. Step 4

After you get your pup used to going in the box, take it away and throw it out. The puppy will still go to that door looking for the box and when they don't see it, they will cry, letting you know that they want to use the bathroom. At this point, you let them out that back door so they can do their business outside.

Tips & Warnings
  • Some dogs will learn faster then others but just be patient.
  • When you first start, make sure that you have the time to take your dog to the litter box every couple hours. This is an important step!

on 9/19/2009 As noted, this article was meant to help people with puppies. My puppy happened to be a chihuahua and did not like going outside (it was winter) therefore getting her to use the liter box kept my house clean and it kept her nice and warm inside. I transitioned to her going outside as the weather changed and once she got used to that, we were able to get through the next winter just fine.

on 9/19/2009 Instead of trying to get it used to going in the litter box every couple hours and waiting for him to do it, why not just take him outside every couple hours until he potties in the CORRECT spot from the beginning. Then there will be no transition time to re-train him outside.
