This how-to article will instruct you on how to recover or reupholster a dining room chair seat. Do you have old dining room chair with dirty or worn cushions? If so, this is an easy fix!

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Screwdriver
  • Upholstery staple gun and staples
  • Thick, attractive fabric
  • Scissors
  • Tailor's measuring tape
  1. Step 1

There is no need to remove the old fabric from the chair, assuming the fabric you are using to recover the seat is thick enough to not be transparent. Turn the chair over and unscrew the seat from the base.

  2. Step 2

Measure the seat and cut a piece of fabric that is large enough for a 3-4 inch overlap to wrap around the seat.

  3. Step 3

Cover the seat in the fabric and turn it over. Staple one side of the fabric down. Turn the seat back over and smooth the fabric, ensuring that there are no wrinkles or puckers in the fabric. Holding the fabric firmly, turn the seat back over. Pull the fabric taut and staple the opposite side of the fabric down (opposite from the side that you first stapled). Be sure to pull the fabric taut, but not so much so that it dimples or creases the cushion of the chair. You want it tight enough to where it will not have loose fabric, but not so tight that it will leave indentations in the cushion.

  4. Step 4

Turn the seat 180-degrees so that one of the unstapled sides is facing you. As though you are wrapping a gift, fold in the edges of the unstapled fabric. Pull it tight and staple it down. Repeat on the opposite side. If you have any loose fabric, simply pull it tight and staple it down.

  5. Step 5

Replace the seat on the base and screw it back into place.
