So you just installed iTunes and it took over all your MP3 files so you double click on them and they open with that now. Or quicktime took over all your JPGs. No matter what it is, you can change it back easily.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
So you double click on a file like a JPG for instance and it opens with a different program than normal. Well if it's another filetype, just pretend it's JPG because that's what my example is going to be.
Step2
So, go find an example of a JPG or whatever file you want changed. It can be any JPG on your entire computer.
Step3
Once you've found one of the files that you want to be opened in another program permanently, right click on it. If there is a sub-menu for "open with" then you're good. If not, hold down the control key and then right click on the file. That should force it to give you an "Open With..." option somewhere. Either way, you should be able to click on the choose program option under the open with menu.
Step4
Look through the list of programs that comes up and find the one that you really want that file type to open with. Click on the one that you want and then check the box that says "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file." For instance, if you want to change JPG files so they open with Windows Picture and Fax Viewer, which is the default for most PCs, then click on that and check the box. Then click okay and they should all immediately be re-assigned permanently.

Tips & Warnings

  • most programs like Quicktime for instance have options while you're first installing them to specify which filetypes you want to be associated with Quicktime. You can select none and save yourself some time resetting a whole bunch of them later.
