A rich vocabulary can help you in life. You do better in life when you have the tools to better express yourself whether it be in speaking or writing. This article explains how to improve your vocabulary using compound words. This technique also works well for ESL teachers. It provides a quick and simple way to introduce new words to your students.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Step1
A compound word is a word made from two words. Some examples include lifeguard (life + guard), motorcycle (motor + cycle), basketball (basket + ball), etc.
Step2
Start with a simple word, for example "eye". Ask your students what an eye is.
Step3
Write the definition on the board - "an organ that allows a living creature to see".
Step4
Write the word "eyebrow" on the board. Ask your students for the definition for this word. Write it on the board.
Step5
Write the word "eyelash" on the board. Ask your students for the definition for this word. Write it on the board.
Step6
Write the word "eyelid" on the board. Ask your students for the definition for this word. Write it on the board.
Step7
Write the word "eyesore" on the board. Ask your students for the definition for this word. Write it on the board.
Step8
Write the word "eyewitness" on the board. Ask your students for the definition for this word. Write it on the board.
Step9
Continue this process for other words or at some point, once the students see the pattern of "eye + another word", ask them to think of other "eye" words.
Step10
Have your students write sentences or a paragraph using these words.
Step11
Have your students think of other compound words. Some examples include baseball, basketball, football, lifeguard, bodyguard, etc.
