Homemade Dog Food

Make your own dog food - avoid potentially dangerous canned food.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Large pot with lid
  • 2 lb. brown rice
  • olive oil
  • 2 packages ground turkey
  • frozen mixed vegetables
  • fresh parsley
  • sandwich-size freezer baggies
  1. Step 1

Bring 10 cups of water to a boil. Add 1-2 tbs. olive oil to water.

  2. Step 2

Add brown rice, ground turkey (helpful to score it into squares while still in package - it breaks up easier in the pot), 1/2 large bag of frozen vegetables, aprox. 1/8 c. parsley (snipped with scissors)

  3. Step 3

Stir all ingredients, chopping up larger pieces of meat.

  4. Step 4

Simmer, covered, for about 35 minutes (use rice directions for time guide).
Take off heat when rice is cooked and allow to cool.
When thoroughly cool, package in sandwich-sized freezer baggies (about 1 cup per bag for my dog - miniature schnauzer)
    Freeze.

  5. Step 5

Defrost each day in microwave for approx. 2 minutes & serve.

Tips & Warnings
  • I discussed this recipe with my veterinarian who said it is good and fulfills all requirements for the dog's nutrition - however, she said go easy on the olive oil to avoid cholesterol problems (substitute lower density oil, if you prefer)
  • You don't need salt - according to pet webites, dogs don't taste salt

on 6/18/2008 This is a good recipe. Dogs serve us very well as our bottom feeders, being on all fours with mouths close to the ground, they keep our eco systems (our homes and yards) clean of biological contaminants and general filth by eating it, therfore we should make sure that their basic diet is as healthy as can be. Great recipe!
