This article is about being prepared before you ask for a raise.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Step1
Research-
Think of all the reasons your boss might have for not giving you a raise. "It's not in the budget." This is a common response, ask them when the budget will be revised and/or if they could offer other benefits such as more vacation, stock, company cell or laptop.
Step2
Knowing when to ask-
You might ask when you have just completed a project that took a lot of time and extra effort on your part or you have just been asked to take on more responsibility then your current position.
Step3
You need to be confident-
Know what you need. Ask for more then you want. Don't ask for a unreasonable amount just a bit more then you want. It is a starting point to negotiate. Let your boss know why you think you deserve a raise. Be able to back it up, have a list of your accomplishments to show the boss.

Tips & Warnings

  • These steps are something you have to do on your own. You have to be prepared to except whatever the decision is.
